I’m trying my hardest to finish up my upcoming record these days, which will contain quite a few songs from this blog and some new ones. I had some idea that I was gonna make a lot of uptempo songs, but the more mid-tempo stuff keeps comming out – I’m a midtempo kinda guy I guess. Maybe it’s because I’m getting lost in some new synths I’ve acquired recently, most probably it’s because I like my voice better on the slower stuff.

It’s been going a little slower with the blog lately as several other projects are comming to a close this month. Nation of Astronauts will be out in a month and I have also been crazy busy with a new project, yet to be named, with the old niepoort gang, Janus Dyg and Peter Binau, which is sounding promising and kinda upbeat – some sort of krautpop thing with a tinge of dub and afro – basically a cookdown of what we have been digging for the last 10 years or so. It’s very tight and controlled and is possibly the best sounding recorded tracks I have ever captured. That alone doesn’t make a great song of course, but it’s a real victory to finally nail that drumsound you’ve been trying to get for a long as you remember.  My plan is to mess it up though…..with insane amounts of bitcrusher…I just haven’t told the guys yet.

On another note, I have cleaned up a small spare room I have in my apartment and plan to install my old four track recorder, a crappy drum maschine and a couple of effects. For the last couple of years I have been writing a lot of small folk snippets, mellow folk type of stuff and I was thinking to record them at night in this small intimate space, where even a whisper can seem loud – back to how I started  – I’ll be flooding instagram with low lit mood pics, and brand new retro clothes :-)  Recently I have been collaborating with people on other projects, where we have recorded backing vocals over skype (for real) and lead vocals on an iphone, so there is definitely something to be said about just getting the take down, instead of waiting for the perfect moment in the studio with the perfect gear and all.

But first things first, so it’s back to the blog album, which has the tentative working title U.R.O ( uro means mobile in danish, as in Calder mobile )….One thing at a time right. Here is a track list so far

Waves

Since completing “Elusive dream” , we’ve been busy busy. Unfortunately not updating this blog, but making music, re arranging the studio, generally exploring different things. This song came about after I lifted the rhythmic feel of a mode selector song and came across an 0ld floppy disc for my Ensoniq EPS 16 + sampler named…MIAMI BRASS :-) I played the song for Peter and he felt it needed an extra section – finally the song ended up as a typical attempt at doing something a bit upbeat…I’ve been trying for years, although critical voices may think I should stick to my moody guns and just do something slow and beautiful , I actually  wrote this song because I thought it could be fun to write a song that would be fun to play LIVE – I never write like that, with such a specific purpose or goal in mind, but it was a good exercise…and lets face it, a lot of art starts out as an exercise or a pastiche, before it’s twisted into something personal.

The lyric is about finding comfort in someones well chosen words, as simple as they may be, sometimes it’s just what you need to hear. As for the production of the song I got totally into the details and the nitty gritty of the song – something I had actually promised myself I wouldn’t do with this blog, but HEY…many lessons were learned and learning new stuff is fun right. The video is basically a run through/test of various video effects, just trying to learn the basics of video editing…fun stuff  – I do have a ton of neat ideas for videos, but most of them seem either to complex or elaborate, basically not very do-able. Gotta do something about that, gotta find my inner minimalist. The argentinian graphic artist Nicolas Paparella was kind enough to lend me some animation footage of his, so I could carry out my experiments. The animation bits (red graphical) were done as an exercise by him, trying to recreate a concert visual he had seen at a U2 concert…:-) not too shabby if you ask me. Anyhow, it was very kind of him and you can check out more of his stuff at www.behance.net/nicolaspaparella

a mannequin a ghost

Here is the next song, a mannequin a ghost. This song rose from the ashes of another project that hit an uninspected dead end a couple of weeks back. There was some shouting and general bad vibes which inspired the mood and lyrics of this song. Determined to get something out of the studio session gone sour, I jammed along with Peter and we recorded a basic track, then wrote some lyrics in a matter of minutes, did the vocal take…and that was it. Janus came down to the studio that same evening and put down the drums and the horn arrangement was added a couple of days later.

I just love when things flow quickly and effortlessly. Having always spend way too much time on songs, I have in recent years come to understand the beauty of working fast, embracing mistakes and the spur of the moment – I guess that is what this blog is all about, I feel it’s helping me in hitting a stride, a flow and staying there. Coincidently the accompanying video is my first ever…so be kind towards my out of sync pixelshow:-)

rough diamonds!

imagesI just finished making a trombone arrangement for a new song….done on my phone:-) sounds great! I’m just in love with the whole concept of apps for music making – blows my mind. The song is called “a mannequin, a ghost” and should be up in a few days and I’m really looking forward to share the story of that song.

GREETINGS

Welcome to the blog! The first song, Mountains for sale, IS UP! This webpage is going to serve as a musical diary and experimental platform for a little while. I’ll be posting new songs and musical escapades every other week or so….give or take – putting them out there as they are made. These are exciting times for me and the band of merry pranksters lurking in the chaotic halls of our music studio, The Keiner Niemand Facility , with a ton of different projects and collaborations coming together this period – looking forward to sharing some ElectrofolkyipadiR&RdubskytangoProgrock madness……or just a simple little pop song.

Mad love goes out to graphic artists Ramiro Espada and Abel Martinez for creating this site – check out Ramiro’s visual for Mountains for sale.

– a l’aventura!
